Statement

The images I have chosen to submit for my digital portfolio include a variety of work from 2007 onwards. The images range from personal projects and from work I have produced for briefs at college.

As a mature student I have been interested in photography for a long time and I am proactive in expanding my skills and experience outside of my current college environment. I learn new techniques and expand my knowledge where possible and regularly update my work on www.modelmayhem.com/adamswindells and www.flickr.com/photos/adam_swindells.

I am eager to gain a place on the course at MMU as I feel it will allow me to challenge myself by giving me opportunities to experiment with and push creative ideas. I also wish to develop my own individual style in my artwork that this course encourages. I wish to develop myself as an artist and produce work that is very creative and innovative. I feel that this course will help me to achieve what I aim to become as an artist, photographer and image maker.

Shooting Glass.

This image is the result of experimenting with photographing glass. The idea was to control what is reflected and what is not. Minimal editing in photoshop was done.

Product photography, rose tea.

In the studio this shot was taken for a magazine brief at college. Teas from around the world is the subject I chose.

Outdoor shoot

This outdoor shoot was arranged over the winter to take advantage of the bright snowy backdrop. I used two flash guns. The flash on camera was used as a fill flash. The off camera flash was my main light.

Hair competition studio shoot.

This photograph was taken in the studio for the hair and beauty department at Tameside college for entry into a styling competition.

Infrared film

My first attempts at using infra red film. This later led to experiments in lith printing and gold toning.

Blue Ridge Parkway panoramic

In this panoramic, shot in 2009, I attempted to capture a scene that had a wide dynamic range in the largest amount of detail that I could. This is a composition of 10 images.

Eden, slide film.

This waterfall was shot on 35mm slide film. I was aiming to demonstrate a situation where the rule of thirds does not apply.

Eden B/W film.

This image captures the sculpture within a sculpture. I used a wide angle lens to capture the entire scene.

Eden B/W Nature in the built environment.

In this photograph I wanted to show how nature is used as a subject of art. It is placed within an environment that is aimed to be natural even though it is inside a man-made structure.

Eden B/W film, Nature in the built environment.

Shot on 35mm film, this image was used as part of 'Nature in the built environment' brief for college.

Pinhole camera shots

These photographs are from various pinhole cameras that I constructed. They were made from match stick boxes, pringles tubes and large tins.

Great Wall of China panoramic

This photograph is one of my earlier shots taken in 2007. It is a composition of three images stitched together in photo shop. I aimed to show the the Great Wall over the distant hill tops in the early morning light.
